August 2006

Hello friends, artists, art lovers!
Its been over six months since the last newsletter so we decided it was time for another. Rob has a lot of workshops coming up so you'll get the full lowdown on everything scheduled through next June. But first off, Rob has made some headlines lately...

figure in action, large study

The Artist's Magazine: Top Twenty Artists under Forty
Congratulations to Rob for being selected by The Artist's Magazine (February 2006 issue) as one of their picks for the top twenty realist artists under the age of forty. It was a nice surprise. There are certainly a lot of talented artists out there. It shows that realist art is truly alive and well today!

American Artist Workshop Magazine, Spring 2006
American Artist editor Stephen Doherty wrote a wonderful and informative article about the September workshop in Ireland entitled "Rob Liberace: Learning from the Masters." The story contains three demos and a lot of information within its eighteen pages!

International Artist Magazine, April/May 2006
In an article entitled "Words from the Wise," Rob was interviewed about important issues impacting artists today. Part two of the series. The other artists interviewed were Burt Silverman, Chris Saper, John Howard Sanden, Tony Rider, David Leffel, Wende Caporale, Judith Carducci, Jacob Collins, Daniel E. Greene, Edward Jonas, Everett Raymond Kinstler, Sherrie McGraw and Timothy Thies.

FLORENCE LAST APRIL, VENICE NEXT APRIL
Students enjoyed a marvelous week touring the many art museums and drawing. All activities were held in the ancient center of Florence. It was such a great success that Margaret from the Art League is currently planning a Venice trip next April. See info below. View more photos from the Florence trip.

A view of Florence from the Campanile (bell tower) - a sight worth every one the the 414 steps to the top - with no handrail. And to think that in the U.S. we are required to install one for any more than two steps!

Celia and Ava enjoyed Florence as well (and even behaved occasionally!).

ROB'S NEW STUDIO STILL COMING ALONG
Some of you are asking when we're going to have a promised party for the completion of Rob's studio. It will happen... sooner or later. Last October Rob moved from his D.C. studio to the studio-in-progress behind the house. Since it has everything necessary for him to set up shop, he has put off completing the final touches (like siding!). So if it comes to mind when you see Rob next, ask him how its going (nudge, nudge). Actually, as always, he's been very busy with his art and various other projects. We're just glad to have him closer to home.

AND ROB'S BOOK STILL COMING ALONG
Still others are asking about the book on classical drawing past due. We're happy to say that a lot of progress has been made this year, mostly due to the graciousness and tenacity of Rob's student and friend, Gio Argentati - who is keeping Rob on a schedule. Thanks Gio!

IF YOU'RE WONDERING WHY OUR HOME PHONE HAS BEEN OUT
FOR ALMOST A MONTH...
We've been Vonaged! We thought we'd cut down on our monthly phone bill by switching to this internet phone provider. What a big mistake! First, phone calls to us were going to a lady in Iowa, and her calls were coming to us, and it went downhill from there. After many hours spent trying to straighten things out, we think that we just might get our original phone number back (with another provider, of course). We think they are holding our number for ransom. We're keeping our fingers crossed that we get it back. So if you are still considering switching, email us first and we'll email the whole story.

UPCOMING WORKSHOP SCHEDULE...

AUGUST
Ecorche (sculpture anatomy) workshop at Incamminati, August 7-11

Rob has been a frequent guest teacher at Nelson Shank's Incamminati school in Philadelphia. The school's emphasis is on classical realism. A group of students just returned from a two week painting workshop and had rave reviews. For more information go to www.studioincamminati.org.

SEPTEMBER
The Art League School in Alexandria, The Figure in Action Sept 5, 6, 7, 8
Tuesday through Friday 10:00 - 4:00
This first workshop is not in the drawing or painting sections of the catalog, so it is easy to overlook. The expressive movement and energetic form of classical figure painting has influenced artists for centuries. This class will explore the dynamic potential of the human form and introduce these concepts into drawings and paintings. Students will study the various approaches artists from the past used to infuse their work with movement and energy and then execute their own pictures with the help of live models. Demonstrations will be given focusing on arrangement of the model and painting and drawing technique. Contact the Art League directly at 703.683.2323 or go to www.theartleague.org for all Art League classes.

ALSO IN SEPTEMBER

The Classical Figure in Full Color, on a Wye River estate near historic Easton, Maryland, September 15, 16, 17

This three day class will explore the beauty of the human figure with an emphasis on color. Students will create several figure paintings in a variety of conditions both indoors and plein air. These arrangements are designed to highlight the particular influence light has on the figure in different environments. The dynamics of color and skin tones will be stressed through various color studies including set-ups with colored lights and "mud-head" painting, a technique involving the set-up of a back-lighted model out-doors which focuses the eye upon large color relationships rather than isolated features. In addition to color exercises students will have the opportunity to work on a long pose. The class will explore different approaches to finishing a painting. Click for complete information and to sign up.

OCTOBER (Workshop sold out as of 7/31 but you can be put on the waiting list)
Red Chalk workshop in North Carolina, October 14-15
Rob will be teaching a two day workshop entitled "The Figure in Red Chalk" on Saturday, Oct. 14th and Sunday, Oct. 15th at "Artspace" in Raleigh. Click for more info and supply list.

DECEMBER
The Art League School in Alexandria
The Painted Portrait: Children and Young Adults. December 8, 9, 10
Students will have the opportunity to study and paint the portraits of 5 sisters ranging in age from 6 to 17. The class will focus on the anatomy and features of younger subjects and students will examine, draw and paint their differences within one family group. Students will also focus on the various approaches to portrait painting from alla-prima to a smoothly glazed finish.
Contact the Art League directly at 703.683.2323 or go to www.theartleague.org.

The two workshops are designed to work in conjunction with one another but can also be taken independently. Please contact the art centers for further information.
