Still
Life with Plums and Gooseberries, August 2007
March
2008
Hello
friends, artists, art lovers!
It has been
twelve months since the last newsletter so we thought we were
due for another. There is a lot to fit in. It has been a busy
year, indeed!
Following is a brief rundown of the past year plus a list of workshops
coming up. We also wanted to showcase Marjorie Forgues (many of
you know and love her as we do) in this issue. She has been a
big help by assisting Rob in his classes and workshops over the
past 7 years and is an amazing painter in her own right. We thought
you'd enjoy seeing some of her work.

Marjorie
and Rob in Northern Ireland, 2005
Ah
Marjorie... even the name lets Rob breathe a sigh of relief! She's
an angel sent from heaven... or at least from Bolivia (with
her French last name from her Father's side). Marjorie's assistance
in Rob's Art League classes and workshops has helped them to run
smoothly and efficiently for the past seven years. We've gotten
to know Marjorie very well. She is a sweetheart to the bone. If
you weren't with us on the 2005 Ireland trip to see Marjorie getting
"attacked" by the killer Bambi while plein-air painting,
you'll have to ask her about it!
Marjorie is a true success story. By
age thirteen, she knew she wanted to become an artist, with inspiration
from greats such as Max Klinger, Frieda Khalo, Salvador Dali, and
Leonardo Da Vinci. She's been working toward her dream ever since.
Only several years ago Marjorie worked in retail. She soon switched
to a job doing faux finishes and murals for a local decorating company.
Now she is entirely immersed in and dedicated to the world of art.
At the moment she is working on two sculptures and a life-sized
painting, while teaching drawing at the Art League. Next summer
she will begin teaching a painting class as well. Marjorie is as
gracious as she is talented. "I think it is so important for
professional artists to mentor people who are seeking the classical
tradition of painting. Apprenticing under Robert has certainly changed
my life. It opened doors for me that I didn't think were possible
in this modern world."
Likewise,
Rob fully appreciates the enrichment Marjorie provides to his classes.
"I've been lucky to have Marjorie in the class. Without her,
each Friday would be absolute chaos. And though she is an amazing
asset in the class, it is as an artist that Marjorie truly shines.
She is an inspiration to everybody in the class, demonstrating that
with hard work and dedication, an artist's growth can be limitless.
No level of success would surprise me for Marjorie. I can easily
see her creating art somewhere within the great walls of the Vatican."

for a private residence on Massachusetts Avenue.

SOME EVENTS AND IMAGES FROM THE PAST
YEAR...
Rob
featured in the U.K.'s The Artist magazine, August 2007
"Artists of the World: Lessons Learned from the Masters"
Rob was written up in the United Kingdom's The Artist magazine,
in a beautifully written article by Sandra Carpenter, former editor of
The Artist's Magazine (a U.S. publication). Yes, it is a bit
confusing with the names being so similar.

the complete text of the magazine article.
Portrait
of Marc Pachter, National Portrait Gallery Director
Last spring Rob was asked to paint Marc Pachter, the Director of the National
Portrait Gallery in Washington, DC, who retired in October. The painting
was unveiled at the Portrait Society of America's annual "Art of
the Portrait" conference in May, where Marc gave a lively keynote
speech and received the "Leadership in the Fine Arts" award.
The event took place in Reston, Virginia. To see an image of Rob presenting
the portrait to Marc go

Mother
Teresa Sculpture for the National Shrine

A "maquette" or small scale
preliminary study commissioned by the National Shrine in Washington,
DC. The final will be life-sized showing Mother Teresa standing with
a baby in her arms and a man crouching at her feet. Rob's terracotta
clay sculpture will be copied and carved in Cararra marble by Italian
artisans. Let's hope they use plenty of bubble wrap when they ship it
back to the U.S.!
Figure
Painting Demo at Zoll Studio of Fine Arts, October 22

The Zoll Studio of Fine Art (just outside the Baltimore beltway) hosted
Rob as he demonstrated how he paints the human figure. Rob painted Wayne,
one of his favorite models.

Rob was commissioned to do a self portrait and completed
it within the last few months. (With daughter Celia in the background).
The client was a psychiatrist who greatly enjoyed analyzing the painting!

Out of the Mouths of Babes....
We had
about 25 students over for dinner the other night, to discuss the upcoming
trip to Venice. A woman was talking to our daughters Ava (5) and Celia
(7), and asked Ava if she liked her daddy's artwork.
"Yea" she replied, nonchalantly, "but Celia is better".

"Drawing
the Human Figure in Silverpoint" Studio Incamminati
August 15, 16, 17, 2008. tuition $350
Silverpoint is one of the oldest, most noble drawing techniques.
Great masters such as Pisanello, Raphael and DaVinci were enchanted
by this precious metal and they revealed the graphic beauty and
artistic power of silverpoint in their art. This class examines
the traditions and techniques of silverpoint by creating drawings
made with silver. Using a simple stylus made of silver wire and
wood, students practice this ancient craft through the exploration
of the human figure. Various methods of hatching, crosshatching and
linear glazing will be studied through drawing demonstrations and
analysis of past masters. Silverpoint stylus and prepared paper
are required. Many art stores carry a silverpoint stylus. A resource
for materials is silverpointweb.com/catalog.html. Sign up through
Studio Incamminati. Click here
