Artist
Monica Linville invites you to join Robert Liberace at her "TreeHouse
Studio" for a
Figure Drawing Workshop
in the foothills of Puerto Rico's eastern rainforest
February 16, 17, 18, 19, 20, 2009
WORKSHOP INFORMATION:
Last
year's workshop was a great success. It was a joy to meet some of
the wonderful, warm people of Puerto Rico! In this 5-day comprehensive
workshop we will explore the beauty of the human figure with an
emphasis on drawing. We will focus on the fundamentals of the human
form and the dynamics of movement . The class will study various
approaches in which artists of the past used to infuse their work
with movement and energy, and then execute our own artwork with
the help of live models. Students will create figure drawings in
a variety of conditions both indoors and plein air. Demonstrations
will be given focusing on the arrangement of the models and drawing
techniques in different environments.

In Monica's studio
you will be surrounded by lush tropical foliage and by a vista that
takes your eye and your spirit along the northeast coast of the
island. One work area is open air; the other surrounded by floor-to-ceiling
windows. You will not lack for inspiration or cool, tropical breezes!

about
the instructor:
If
you can’t catch Rob’s classes at the Art League of Virginia
or at one of his seminars at the Portrait Society of America’s
annual conference, don't miss this opportunity to learn from one of
America’s foremost portrait artists and teachers. Rob is a contemporary
classicist inspired by the old masters. He is equally gifted in painting,
drawing, and sculpture. In
February 2006, he was selected by The Artist's Magazine as
one of their choices for the top twenty realist artists under the
age of forty. In
April of 2003 Rob received the Grand Prize Award in the International
Portrait Competition from the Portrait Society of America. In 2002
he won their Best of Show Award. Rob has been commissioned to do portraits
for clients such as George Bush, Ambassador Sol Linowitz, and Marc
Pachter, the director of the National Portrait Gallery. He is currently
working on a life sized sculpture of Mother Teresa for the National
Shrine.
Rob received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. at George Washington University
where he was the recipient of the Morris Louis Scholarship and the
National Academy of Arts and Letters Scholarship for painting. American
Artist magazine honored Rob with their “Emerging Artist Award”
and featured his work in their 1996 Art Master’s issue. Rob
is perhaps best known for his classic and distinctive style of figure
drawing. American Artist magazine highlighted Rob's drawing techniques
as the cover feature in their May 2002 annual drawing issue. Rob is
represented by the Arcadia Gallery in New York City and the John Pence
Gallery in San Francisco.

DRAWING
SUPPLIES
(BRING
PAINTING SUPPLIES ONLY IF YOU WANT TO
PAINT BUT CLASS WILL FOCUS ON DRAWING)

of a treck from the studio)

Portable easel
MISCELLANEOUS
Sunscreen and light insect repellent
Lunch/Snacks (soft drinks, coffee and tea will be available
at the studio) Many of the guest houses have
light kitchen facilities so you may want to find out when reserving
your lodging.
Special
travel considerations for those who fly with oil paints (not
required for this workshop) In view of
the recent threats to the airlines, you will not be able to
bring solvents such as terpenoid on the plane. Again, Monica
will have solvent available at the studio. Though oil paints
and most artist's mediums are not flammable, airport security
guards will confiscate them if you try to take them as carry-on.
They must be checked with your luggage. Make sure to pack them
well and double bag in plastic bags or containers so they don't
soil your other belongings if they leak. Since they will not
be in the pressurized part of the plane, there is the possibility
of bursting as well. BY ALL MEANS, PLEASE CHECK WITH YOUR AIRLINE
FOR SPECIFIC RULES AND REGULATIONS REGARDING ARTIST'S MATERIALS.
Another option
is to ship oil paints and other non-flammables to the workshop
destination ahead of time. Contact Monica
about this. Here are more travel
tips for traveling with oil.

with wonderful breakfasts. Friendly management as well.)

Also, the beach that the hotel overlooks is popular with surfers,
locals and snowbirds.

and beach enthusiasts. Quiet retreat on the edge of the lush

at $95. 2 night minimum, weekly rate. Hosts live down the

Coqui’s
Hideaway/787 887 2224/20 minutes
This guest house is located in the mountains. It’s an
apartment with 3 bedrooms and full kitchen, bath and living
area. Your price is based on the number of bedrooms you will
be using. (They close off the unused ones) It’s on a
beautiful, secluded piece of property in the rainforest. Since
it has a full kitchen, you can purchase food and make your
own meals if desired. Otherwise, it’s a car drive to
area restaurants and other area attractions, like the beach.
It would be a good place for a small group to rent together
and share costs.
Villa Sevilla

Another mountain location, this vacation rental property gives
you a choice of renting a full house or an apartment, each
fully furnished. Again, this would be a good option for those
students coming in small groups. It’s a car drive to
restaurants and area
attractions but certainly private and with lots of room for
those who may want to
continue work on their paintings in the evenings.

There are 3 apartments in this guest house, each able to accommodate
a different
number of people. It too is up in the hills and surrounded

Costs could be shared and meals prepared on the premises.
It’s a car drive to area
restaurants and attractions, but close to a major highway
so it’s an easy drive.
Getting to the studio is a pretty straight shot.
Yunque Mar Hotel/787 889 5555/15 minutes
This is a small hotel right on the beach in Luquillo, just
outside the small town itself. It has an open air restaurant
overlooking the water that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.
It is also a quick car drive to area restaurants and is easy
to get to the main highway for any adventures you may want
to take. The beach area is relatively private and it has a
pool. It has an amazing terrace overlooking the ocean.
